Filiberto Ojeda Rios, 72, who had been on the run for 15 years and became a heroic figure for some in the independence movement, opened fire on the agents on Friday from a farmhouse in the Puerto Rican town of Hormigueros, officials said.
An FBI agent was wounded, but the death of Ojeda Rios sparked protests from pro-independence Puerto Ricans, who accused the FBI of mishandling the arrest. Luis Fraticelli, the special agent in charge of the FBI for the United States island territory, said: “He opened fire … we had to defend ourselves.”
