The following statement was released by the National Hispanic Caucus of Hispanic State Legislators (NHCSL) regarding Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s efforts to dismantle immigrant scam operation in Dallas.
The Dallas County district court took major action against Fidelina Cuevas, owner of Grupo ECSA, a group accused of providing unauthorized legal services on immigration matters to innocent victims. In November 2004, a restraining order issued by Attorney General Abbott required Ms. Cuevas take down a web site marketing her fraudulent business. In December, she was fined $13,000 for failure to obey court orders. After further investigation from the Attorney General’s office, it was discovered that the web site was still active. Due to the failed attempts, State District Judge Jay Patterson, decided to hold Ms. Cuevas in contempt of the court as well as ordered her imprisonment for 179 days, unless she is able to prove the web site was taken down.
