A prominent Latino rights group has filed a federal class-action suit against Brookhaven Town and Suffolk County, charging that they have illegally targeted Latinos in a housing crackdown that has led to the eviction of at least 100 tenants in Farmingville this summer.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Brooklyn last week by the Manhattan-based Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, states that all the residents in 11 houses shut down recently were Latinos, although Latinos make up only 8 percent of Brookhaven’s population. It also alleges that a town housing inspector used an expletive and a racial slur against a day laborer during a confrontation last month.
