Thousands of Hispanic people live right in Iowa, and many of them are in the country illegally. Now, a couple hundred people will get some help starting life here in America. They are called matriculas, a Mexican identification card, which will basically help immigrants start up a bank account here in the United States.
The cards are similar to a passport, but they do not grant citizenship. The Mexican consulate out of Omaha will be here on October first to process 200 cards at the HOLA center in East Des Moines. The reason why 200 is the magic number, is simply because that’s how many cards the Mexican consulate can process in one day. The consulate usually visits about once a year for this purpose.
