City says sí to Spanish class

DURHAM — City housing inspector Bennie Fields studied Spanish in eighth grade and for a year in high school, but he had trouble remembering the language years later when he knocked on the doors of Durham’s Latino residents.

So Fields turned to his employer to help him learn the language. The city has offered free Spanish classes since 1990 to its employees who can demonstrate a need to use the language in the workplace.
