Remembering Austin’s own ‘Mexico’

The area that is now Austin once was a part of Mexico, but it wasn’t until the early 1850s that the first Mexicans came to live in the town that Anglo settlers founded. They didn’t stay long. Vigilante slave owners ran them out of their campsite on the Colorado River for helping black slaves escape to Mexico.

Not until almost two decades later would Mexican immigrants settle in the city again. This time, they put down roots in the southwest corner of the young city, a few hundred yards from the river in a poor neighborhood known as “Mexico.”
