Knowledge is Power!
WHEN PANAMA’S rapper El General appeared dressed in Latin American dictator garb for the first time in the early ’90s, most music fans had trouble taking him seriously.
Not that his songs were lousy — rapid-fire Spanish-language rhymes over heavy reggae beats — but it was hard to fathom that this General could lead a revolution in a campy costume.
More than a decade later, though, El General is considered the flashpoint for the genre that is taking the music world by storm: reggaetón — an Afro-Caribbean hybrid of reggae, rap and ritmo tropical. Puerto Rico’s Ivy Queen and Tego Calderón may ultimately prove to be bigger, and more influential, than J.Lo and Ricky Martin ever were during the turn-of-the-century Latin boom.
