Knowledge is Power!
LINCOLNTON - Last October, Fernando Martínez approached his boss.
He was frustrated about not finding the vegetables his wife needed for his favorite Mexican dishes. When he did find the produce at a local Latino store, it was either old or too expensive.
So the 27-year-old asked for a small plot of land where he could grow crops from his native Mexico.
David Ledford, 40, who grows mostly large shade trees on the 200 acres he leases in Lincoln County, was intrigued. Had Martínez made the request 10 years ago, Ledford said, he probably would’ve denied it because he would have seen no need. But the Latino population has grown so much in recent years that Ledford saw the new crops as a way to make money.
