Putnam County had the state’s seventh-highest percentage of Hispanics in the population, at 4.38 percent, in the 2000 U.S. Census. Statewide, the percentage grew from 1.3 percent of the population in 1990 to 1.9 percent in 2000. Nationally, the rate was 12.5 percent in 2000, compared to 9 percent in 1990.
Nearby Defiance County has the largest Hispanic population in the state, with 7.23 percent of its population.
Hernandez lived in Putnam County before moving to Dayton. He modeled his store in Ottawa, with its 3.8 percent Hispanic population, after a shop he frequented in Dayton. He decided to locate in Putnam County’s seat since Leipsic, which boasts 14.7 percent of its population as Hispanic, already has a Mexican food store.
