Symbolizing the changing face of the American Catholic Church, the Vatican on Monday named a Hispanic priest the next auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of San Bernardino.

Bishop-elect Rutilio J. del Riego joins 23 other Hispanics in the 450-member United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. When he is ordained Sept. 20, the local diocese will become the only one in the nation to have two Hispanic bishops. Bishop Gerald R. Barnes is Latino, with a little bit of Irish blood.
