Knowledge is Power!
At the time of the Civil War, for example, approximately one third of Cincinnati’s residents were German immigrants. As they founded German newspapers, churches, and bilingual schools for their children, they prompted a debate among Cincinnati’s non-German residents as to whether such a large number of German immigrants were corrupting the country’s language and culture.
Today such a discussion over German immigration would seem absurd because our German ancestors learned English and assimilated into mainstream America. Unfortunately today we face a similar debate today over Latino immigration and Courtney Combs’ recent misguided proposal to make English the state’s official language will not change the rate at which today’s immigrants learn English.
