As part of the University of Texas at Arlington’s Stars For Nursing project, about a dozen high school students from the Dallas-Fort Worth area are participating in a series of programs aimed at exposing them to different health care professions.

Knowledge is Power!

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which provides some funding for the Stars program, Hispanics are underrepresented in the health care field.

Hispanics, however, are the largest and fastest-growing minority group in the United States, and they make up 22.5 percent of the population in Tarrant County, according to 2003 census numbers.

Dr. Elena Rios, director and founder of the National Hispanic Medical Association, an organization based in Washington, D.C., that advocates better health care for Hispanics and other minorities, said programs such as Stars are necessary.
